With the coming into force of the Employment Rights Act, Act No. 33 of 2008, workers whose services have been terminated may elect to join the Workfare Programme which is managed under the aegis of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations & Employment.

Section 42(2)(a) provides that a worker who elects to join the Workfare Programme shall register himself with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations & Employment within seven days of the termination of his employment.

Members are invited to include in any letter of termination of employment, information regarding the statutory time limit of seven days that a worker has for registration under the Workfare Programme.
