Briefing Session on Influenza A (H1N1)

The MEF organised a Briefing Session on the spread of the Influenza A (H1N1) on Friday 28 August 2009 at the seat of the MEF.  Some 100 members attended the Session.

Dr Rafiq Aumeerally, Community Physician/ NCD Coordinator, Ministry of Health and Quality of Life made a presentation, whereby he gave an overview of the “Influenza A (H1N1) virus” and precautions to be taken.  He stated that in March 2009, the first cases of the influenza were identified in Mexico, gradually spreading to other regions of the world.  He explained that the World Health Organisation uses a six-phased approach as an indication of the risk to global health.  Presently the world is in phase 6 which means that the global pandemic is under-way.

The main symptoms of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus are similar to the symptoms of a regular human flu that is, runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever above 38C, body ache, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty in breathing and pneumonia.

The Session was very interactive and members had the occasion to participate to a question and answer session with Dr Rafiq Aumeerally, Mr Fazil Khodabaccus and Mr Joonas.
