Highlight on the Briefing Session: Paper Recycling at the Workplace

The MEF in collaboration with Lagtex Ltd is implementing a Project for Paper Recycling at the Workplace. In this context, a Briefing Session was held on Friday 6 November 2009 from 10 00 to 12 00. The objective of the session was to explain the modalities of the project and provide guidance to participants on the practical measures on how to implement a paper recycling system at the workplace. Some 47 members attended the session.

We had the pleasure to have Mr Renaud Lagesse, Director, Lagtex Ltd and Miss Dream Cazzaniga, UN Global Compact Officer as resource persons.

Miss Dream Cazzaniga elaborated on the 7 practical steps to introduce paper recycling at the workplace:

  1. Obtain commitment from the top management
  2. Liaise with recycling company
  3. Place bin(s) for collection
  4. Identify types of paper to be sent for recycling
  5. Assign responsibilities and involve staff
  6. Keep records and monitor
  7. Acknowledge outcomes and set (new) targets

Mr Lagesse highlighted that since 25 years Lagtex Ltd has been collecting and recycling textile material to help create employment and improve the environment. Gradually they expanded their recycling business and are involved in collection of paper waste since 4 years now.

The company collects paper waste and exports it to countries such as India and China. Today, the objective of the company is to recycle paper in Mauritius instead of exporting abroad. The company plans to focus on the collection of paper waste while outsourcing the recycling activity to an international company which will be locally situated.

Mr Lagesse pointed out that the recycling business involves numerous constraints especially in terms of logistics. The project will initially cover the Ebène region but can be extended to other regions depending on the volume of paper waste and logistics available in the other regions.

He extended to members his support and advice for any paper recycling initiative.

We reiterate our thanks to members who were present and look forward to welcoming those who could not attend the event.
